There are several kinds of eating disorders that range from malnutrition to obesity and include anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge-eating disorder, nutritional deficiency combined with obesity, and eating disorders arising as a direct result of physiological illnesses and medical treatments.
Since I was a dancer when I was much younger, I have been around people with eating disorders and for many years I have provided effective eating disorder treatment. What is important to recognise is that there are faults in the way a person thinks and eating disorder treatment can help considerably. Just doing nothing and staying doing the same old patterns is not a wise move. The earlier an eating disorder is treated the better the outcome. However, regardless of how long you might have been suffering from an eating disorder treatment can help.
Many people have got over their eating disorders, started to practise good eating patterns and attained a stable healthy weight after they have dealt with the emotional problems that caused the eating disorder in the first place.
Eating disorders are not just bad eating habits so we may need to look into the reasons the eating disorder developed in the first place. The does not means you have to go through trauma from the past but it does mean you need to address the unfinished business that has not yet been resolved. Sometimes when people come into therapy the therapist is the first person to whom they have admitted that their eating patterns are out of control.
In addition to offering eating disorder counselling, I am also a naturopath, trained in nutritional medicine and a clinical herbalist so I may add to hypnotherapy and psychotherapy other therapeutic approaches in healing someone with an eating disorder. All eating disorders can benefit dramatically from dietary consideration and lifestyle changes, in which we follow a naturopathic model, cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnotherapy.
