What is self-hypnosis? Hypnosis is the process of inducing a trance-like state, either in yourself (self-hypnosis), or another person. This does not include deep sleep because that is not a trance state, although very deep hypnosis may resemble deep sleep. People naturally go into trances all the time as they drift off out of conscious attention and seem absent from the outside world. There may be times when you have done things automatically, without being consciously aware what you were doing, and you were in a trance. You are in a kind of trance when you are watching television, listening to the radio, driving a car, reading or any action where you are focusing your attention. The difference with self-hypnosis is that you are bringing on a trance by focusing the attention inside yourself. When people discover how to induce trance in themselves, they can find it an incredibly liberating experience. There is a sense of being given back control of your own mind and igniting new, positive experiences and initiating change by stepping out of the conscious, critical mind and tapping into the vast resources of the unconscious. What is the Conscious and Unconscious Mind? The conscious and unconscious are metaphors for the way we view the function, quantity and qualities of the mind. You can think of the conscious mind being like the hallway in a house and the unconscious being like the rest of the house. You have to go through the conscious mind to get to the house (unconscious) but you cannot store or use everything there. It is very useful for keeping things out of the house that you do not want and letting in things you do. The conscious mind is very small in comparison with the unconscious and only has a memory of about 20 to 30 seconds. The unconscious mind is much greater in size, therefore more intelligent. It runs our bodies, and remembers every single thing that has happened to us, storing all that information away until we need it. We may not be consciously aware that we have all those memories, but we do. Because the unconscious is much smarter it often protects the conscious mind by keeping from it the things that it does not need to know or deal with. Both the conscious and unconscious minds work in tandem to create and activate the whole personality. What we do when we induce trances with hypnosis is directly access the unconscious mind and all its resources, bypassing the conscious mind. The human mind is a rich source of creation and if you can imagine anything inside your head when you are in a trance you are halfway there to making it happen in reality. If you can learn to harness your imagination, your intelligence and abilities will shoot off the scale. People are only limited by the prisons they create in their own minds, so for a moment think about some of the prisons you have created for yourself in your life. REMEMBER IMAGINATION IS THE KEY A Brief History of Hypnosis Each of us are not only bound by our personal interpretation of what hypnosis is, but also our cultural understanding. Moving from one culture or time to another changes the classification of what may or may not constitute hypnosis. Chinese medicine recognises over 5000 years of hypnotic relationships between healers and patients. The Egyptians experienced Temple Sleep, which was induced and identified by priests as a special healing and enlightening state. In ancient Greece, Asclepian dream healing could also contextually be identified as hypnosis. Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, Ghengis Khan, Richard the Lionheart, Napoleon, Hitler, Churchill, and Billy Graham all practised hypnosis from a socio-psychological perspective. Tribal medicine men, witchdoctors, Hindu fakirs, Indian yogi and Persian magi have all practised their own forms of hypnosis, either consciously or unconsciously, not necessarily having identified it as hypnosis. Generally this ability to entrance and utilise that special focused relationship has remained in the hands of spiritual leaders, priests, healers and philosophers. Hypnosis has been a tool that many civilisations have used, either to control the many or guide, cure and develop the individual. The first high-profile use of hypnosis in our modern records is with the physician Anton Mesmer (1734-1815). His theory of animal magnetism included the passing of hands over parts of the subject's body, which was supposed to effect a cure. His patients believed that he was transferring a magnetic force or invisible fluid into them that would travel around their bodies to dispel illness. This force could be stored in many objects and receptacles to be used when needed, and could be transferred either through the hands or sometimes a metal wand. Towards the end of the first half of the 19th century, animal magnetism spread as far as Italy, Spain, Corfu, throughout the rest of Europe and Scandinavia, and even Brazil. However, many magnetisers began to realise that it was the hypnotic placebo effect that was responsible for alleviating psycho-somatic illness and that the trance state could be reproduced without any connection to the magnetism. The medical profession became interested in the phenomenon and in the latter half of the 19th century the psychological theory of hypnosis established itself when James Braid, the English doctor, coined the word 'hypnosis'. Modern Clinical Hypnotherapy & Hypnosis There are many kinds of clinical hypnotherapies practised in the world today, based on various psychotherapeutic philosophies. Hypnosis is also used in medicine and dentistry to induce a natural state of anaesthesia while a person undergoes surgery or dental procedures. Its success in helping people with a huge variety of physical and psychological issues is well documented. About
